To finish our celebration of the women of Berlin, we want to honor Leola Smack was born in 1934 in Whaleyville. She attended Flower Street School in Berlin and Worcester High School which were segregated schools. She graduated from Bowie State Teachers College, and returned to Berlin to became a teacher in Worcester County Public Schools, first at Flower Street School, then at Buckingham Elementary School. She became the first Black teacher to teach at Buckingham just after Worcester County Public schools were desegregated in 1970. She retired in 1992 after teaching for 35 years. Mrs. Smack also served on the boards of several local nonprofits in the Berlin area, including the Worcester County Library and served on the Board of Elections for both Worcester County and town of Berlin. #womenshistorymonth #womenofberlinmd #berlinmd
To celebrate Women’s History Month we would like to honor Rozelle Handy. She lived near Ayres Creek East of Berlin with her parents from 1900 until her death at age 49 in 1920. Rozelle established the first lending library on the front porch of her family home. Eventually she moved the book collection into a room in the Berlin community building and named it The Friendly Library”. That library was the foundation for what became the Worcester County Public Library. #womenshistorymonth #tellingthestoriesofberlin #berlinmd
To start off women’s history month we want to celebrate the women of Berlin. These are a few photos from our archives showcasing women in Berlin. #womenshistorymonth #tellingthestoriesofberlin #berlinmd
