To finish our celebration of the women of Berlin, we want to honor Leola Smack was born in 1934 in Whaleyville. She attended Flower Street School in Berlin and Worcester High School which were segregated schools. She graduated from Bowie State Teachers College, and returned to Berlin to became a teacher in Worcester County Public Schools, first at Flower Street School, then at Buckingham Elementary School. She became the first Black teacher to teach at Buckingham just after Worcester County Public schools were desegregated in 1970. She retired in 1992 after teaching for 35 years. Mrs. Smack also served on the boards of several local nonprofits in the Berlin area, including the Worcester County Library and served on the Board of Elections for both Worcester County and town of Berlin. #womenshistorymonth #womenofberlinmd #berlinmd
